Should I Allow My Dog on the Furniture?

If you are thinking about getting a dog, there are some rules that you are going to have to think about. For example, are you going to let your pup on the furniture in your home? Will they sleep in your bed? This is a debate that a lot of owners have and there are conflicting views on the subject. While it can seem like an innocent thing, there are a lot of negatives that come with it. Let’s look at the debate to help you decide whether you are going to let your canine on the furniture.

Behavioral Issues

There are some people that argue letting your dog on the furniture can change their behavior. Namely, it can make them dominant and think that they are in charge. There is a belief that this could lead to aggressive behavior towards other members of the family. For instance, when you try to sit on their side of the sofa or ask them to get down from the bed, they might growl or snap. While this could happen, the chances are the dog does not respect its owners and thinks it is the boss. This can result from a lot of interactions with your furry friend and not just because you let them on the furniture.

A lot of people choose to set boundaries. In other words, they let their pooch jump on the sofa when they say they can. This can be a good way of regulating when they are on the furniture and need your permission. You could also choose to use custom pet blankets from Woof Blankets. This is going to create a spot on the furniture especially for your canine and where they can smell their own scent. This allows them to relax and know that they are allowed there.

Hygiene and Cleanliness

A lot of owners choose to avoid letting their furry friends on the furniture due to hygiene reasons. Of course, your pup is outside and can bring in dirt and debris. They can also leave fur all over your sofa or bed. This can mean a lot of cleaning before you use the furniture yourself. In addition, if you have dog allergies that you have to manage, the pet dander and fur that they leave behind on your furniture might aggravate your allergies more.

Again, this is going to be something that you decide on. Perhaps you let your dog on the sofa but not the bed where you sleep. In fact, you may not care at all about hygiene when it comes to your pooch since they are a member of your family. Ensuring that you clean often and change your bed regularly can keep your home clean. Regular grooming and wiping your dog’s paws will also help after they have been outside. In addition, setting boundaries can help you bond with your pet and still allow them on some furniture and not others.
